Ikachan Announced For Nintendo eShop on 3DS and DSi

Haven’t heard of Ikachan? Not many really have. Only those crazy die-hard fans of the indie sensation Cave Story have heard of it before, but hey, they have great taste in games.
Ikachan is the game Cave Story creator Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya created as a warm up for his mega hit. Although free for years through Cave Story‘s website, Nicalis is still porting the underwater adventure game to both Nintendo 3DS and DSiWare for a small fee.
Confusion has been abound surrounding these ports as Nicalis will be bringing not one but two different versions of the game to the handhelds, one catered for the 3DS resolution and one made specifically for the DSi’s small resolution.
“It seems like a…shame to play a 2D pixel-art game with a blurry screen. Sure, you can hold the Start button or whatever the method is to boot in native resolution, but then you end up with a tiny screen on the 3DS and particularly on the 3DS XL.
This is literally the only reason I decided to port Cave Story to the 3DS… I think we’re the only developers doing this and it’s probably because it’s a lot more work, but definitely worth it.”
“Ika” means squid in Japanese, and that is exactly what your character in the game will be, a squid. His underwater paradise has been rocked by an earthquake, and its up to him to help his fellow sea-dwellers in crisis and put a stop to the squabbling amongst the survivors.
I’ve only played Ikachan for a handful of minutes, and it’s a pleasant little game. Its influences on Cave Story peek through a lot, but don’t expect the overall same level of genius throughout. I wouldn’t pay more than $5 for it, so just check out the free version if you’re curious.
